Reduce Plastic Waste for a Clean Environment
A Clean Environment for all
Our environment plays a very important part in our lives as it is directly impacting on our health. By taking care of our environment, we are in fact taking care of ourselves. We can keep our environment clean by reducing the usage of chemicals and pesticides, reducing waste and recycling more, reducing the use of plastic and single use products, reducing carbon footprints and maintaining healthy eco-systems. The environment we live in impacts directly on our quality of life, our physical and mental health. We all want to live in a world that is not threatened by the risk of viruses and infections, and a world where people and all living creatures and the eco-systems are not threatened by climate change.
A clean and safe environment should be everyone’s concern, and everyone should try and contribute to maintaining this green and clean, not only for now but also for our children and the future generations. Fresh clean air, clean and safe places to live in and good health are essential for our children and for young people’s healthy development.
A million plastic bottles are bought around the world every minute and it is estimated that by 2021 the consumption of plastic bottles is set to increase by 20%. As the demand for plastic bottles increases, with 20,000 bottles being used currently every second, the efforts to keep up with the collection and recycling of these bottles is rapidly falling, resulting in a 93% of the total of this plastic bottles ending up as waste in landfill or in our oceans. Sadly, we do not see enough being done to help us all maintain a healthy environment and save our planet.
Currently between 5 million and 13 million plastic bottles end up in our oceans every year and according to environmental scientists by 2050 if there are no drastic improvements, it is predicted that there will be more plastic bottles in the ocean than fish. It takes approximately 450 years for a plastic bottle to decompose may help us all re-think the way we consume or use products that come in a single use plastic bottle. the plastic pollutions not only affects sea life and fish, unfortunately as the sea creatures and fish are exposed to and ingest plastic microparticles this ends up into our food chain. It is estimated that people who eat seafood ingest up to 11,000 tiny pieces of plastic every year. The plastic pollution crisis is as serious as the climate change crisis and more has to be done to address this.
Chemicals in disinfectants
In addition to the direct health conditions caused by Covid-19, the current pandemic has also aggravated our environment’s sustainability by producing more plastic waste and the production and use of more harsh chemicals that are now sold as a solution to today’s problem. The research shows that in the last 60 years more than 85,000 commercial chemicals have been developed.
When buying common disinfectants, we are not only exposed to one type of chemical, but to a mixture of chemicals, often not clearly enough labelled for us to easily read. Let’s start making a difference to our health and to our environment one step at a time by learning the benefits of using non-toxic and natural disinfectants and sanitizers and by reducing the high number of plastic bottles purchased.
